Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the most critical parameter measured in fish culture. Galvanic (electrochemical) probes have been an industry standard for many years, but as the technology develops, the cost of optical probes is coming down and they are becoming a viable option.
In general, optical probes are more stable and require less maintenance. In fact, one commercial farmer reported that by switching to optical probes, they saved 6 hrs/week in maintenance time.
