DFO confirms closure of Discovery Islands’ salmon farms in B.C.

The Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Joyce Murray, has announced her commitment to the closure of all farms in the core territories of the Laich-kwil-tach and Klahoose First Nations – a region DFO calls the Discovery Islands.

For several years now, Minnesota fish farmers have been in search of a fish species that was a higher market value than tilapia. Yellow perch, with its mild, sweet flavour with firm, flaky white flesh, appears to be the answer.

Norway’s aquaculture tax’s impacts

In September, Norway’s government proposed the introduction of a 40 percent “ground rent” tax on salmon and trout farming companies. Norway’s government says the resource tax will ensure that ‘more of the value created should go back to society’ with municipalities that are close to fish farms benefiting the most.
