Researchers are using artificial intelligence to identify individual fish, with the goal of building population models that track trout health and habitat changes. The research—with a focus on brook trout—is a collaboration between data scientists at the University of Virginia and the U.S. Geological Survey. The aim is to create a more efficient and accurate way to track trout by using "fish-ial recognition" software.

The Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board and the Puget Sound Partnership are investing US$81.5 million in recovering at-risk salmon species. In a press release on Sept. 18, the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office announced the award of 150 grants in 29 counties toward barrier removals for migrating salmon, tree-planting to shade rivers and improvement of stream habitat.

New York-based recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) company LocalCoho is now closer to its goal of raising US$4 million by the end of 2023. LocalCoho said it secured a "significant new investment" from impact investment firm Cuna del Mar. LocalCoho's salmon are grown in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The company is focused on growing premium coho salmon.
