PEI's Atlantic Aqua Farms receives $3.4M for triploid mussels breeding program

Prince Edward Island-based Atlantic Aqua Farms has been awarded C$3.4 million (US$2.5 million) in research funding to develop Canada’s first-ever genomics selective breeding program for triploid mussels. Triploid bivalves such as oysters and mussels offer superior meat quality, grow faster and are better at surviving storms.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has announced the release of a new Will and Estate Pre-Planning Tool for Canadian farms to help producers including fish farmers think about how to plan for the future of their operations successfully. The Farm Transition - Will and Estate Pre-Planning Tool for Canadian farms is based on speaker and author, Tom Deans’ Willing Wisdom Index platform and has been adapted to reflect the needs of Canadian farm owners.


Cooke Aquaculture appoints new director of public affairs

Ocean-raised Atlantic salmon producer, Cooke Aquaculture USA Inc., has appointed Steven Hedlund as director of public affairs.  Hedlund, who has experience in seafood communications, public affairs, event management and media relations,  joins the family business from the Global Seafood Alliance and Best Aquaculture Practices. Joel Richardson, vice president of Public Relations, Cooke Inc is excited Hedlund is joining the company.

A tribute to aquaculture pioneer, A.M. (Arnie) Sutterlin

Dr. A.M. Sutterlin passed away peacefully in July 2023 at his home in Souris, P.E.I., just shy of his 85th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Melitta (of Bay d’Espoir NL), and daughter, Nancy (Sutterlin) Clements, and grandchildren, Cape Breton, N.S.
