Canada’s Agriculture Day sparks call to recognize aquaculture as farming

In commemoration of Canada’s Agriculture Day (Feb. 11), aquaculturists are saying that aquaculture is indeed agriculture. In a LinkedIn post shared by the Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association, Miko Leavitt, hatchery manager at Kelly Cove Salmon, said the future is farmed salmon as nature cannot sustain the world population.


Yakama Nation’s Ilene Goudy awarded 2025 Kurt Grinnell scholarship

The Kurt Grinnell Aquaculture Scholarship Foundation (KGASF) has named Yakama Nation member, Ilene Goudy, as its first award recipient for 2025.  Goudy is an environmental science student at Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington, and has deep family roots in the state's Cle Elum, Ellensburg, and Wenatchee areas.


NOAA and Blue Ocean Mariculture use AI to monitor monk seal behaviour

NOAA Fisheries and Blue Ocean Mariculture are using technology to study Hawaiian monk seal interest in aquaculture net pens in Hawai'i. Blue Ocean Mariculture is the only commercial offshore finfish aquaculture facility in Hawai'i waters.

Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute has launched a free online training program to grow queen conch. Megan Davis, Ph.D., a research professor at the institute, who has spent over 40 years conserving and restoring the species and Becky Holt, an assistant director for the aquaculture and conservation program at the institution, share their expertise and knowledge in growing and sustaining the queen conch. » Read more
