Arva Flour Mills, North America’s oldest continuously operating commercial flour mill, announced it will acquire the Red River Cereal Brand from Smucker Foods of Canada Corp., a subsidiary of The J.M. Smucker Co.

Health Canada has announced new regulations for supplemented foods, defined as pre-packaged foods containing one or more added ingredients, such as vitamins, mineral nutrients, amino acids, caffeine or herbal extracts.

45% of small biz employers stop hiring and 4% plan layoffs: report

According to Alignable’s July Hiring Report, 45 per cent of small business owners say they’ve put any hiring on hold, largely because of high labour costs and skyrocketing inflation, and an average of four per cent say they’re starting to reduce their staffing to improve the financial health of their businesses. In the case of restaurants, specifically, 38 per cent say they can’t currently afford to add workers.

Latest data on sales at food services and drinking places: May 2022

Two years after the onset of the pandemic and its subsequent restrictions on the food services and drinking places subsector, unadjusted sales for May 2022 were up 62.2 per cent compared with May 2021 and 12.7 per cent higher compared with May 2019.

Canada announces front-of-package nutrition labelling

Health Canada is introducing new nutrition labelling regulations for packaged foods requiring a symbol on the front of packages indicating that a food is high in saturated fat, sugars and/or sodium. The regulations come into effect on July 20, 2022, and require completion by Jan. 1, 2026.
