Fit for Duty: Leadership and fitness

Although the focus may change for people advancing in their careers, remaining fit and setting examples for others to follow is something that would be great to see from all organizational leaders. New recruits work hard at being well conditioned firefighters when they join their department, both volunteer and career. Should your department’s chiefs continue to work out and promote fitness? I’m biased. Of course, they should. Health and fitness should be a part of everyone’s regular practice. By Sherry Dean

Leadership Forum: Know your municipality

Like other fire service leaders, my career has taken many different paths. My experiences are not drastically different than others leading their services, but some of the lessons I’ve learned are unique. Having the ability to experience other job areas and understand their responsibilities can be a huge part of a leader’s development. A leader who takes the time to learn the responsibilities of other areas of the municipality can improve their leadership abilities in their own department. By Chris Harrow

Firefighters and mesothelioma: 4 important questions to answer

NFPA announces 100th Anniversary Fire Prevention Week™ Theme

Fire Prevention Week™ 2022 is October 9th-15th! This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™”, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires by developing and practicing a home escape plan.

Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.

New FPW item will be available as of July 28th from Firehall Bookstore.

Extrication Tips: So many choices — Struts

When thinking about our compliment of auto ex tools and how we evaluate our needs, the one area that is often overlooked or undervalued is the stabilizing and/or lifting struts. While some may argue this is due to their somewhat limited use on our general extrication calls, with the advent of newer struts on the market, today’s strut combinations put that argument to bed very quickly. Back to Basics: Flowing the aerial

We are going to look at flowing water from the aerial master streams and the basics of doing so. Not every department has an aerial device, but they will have master streams that can be set up on the ground or even mounted on top of the engine or pumper. By Mark van der Feyst » Read more...
