A Look at Suicide by Cop in Officer-Involved Shootings

By definition, "suicide by cop" (SBC) is a method of suicide that occurs when an individual engages in threatening behaviour, with the goal of being killed by law enforcement. Today, it has entered the language of mainstream society.

Dr. Peter Collins, who has been a member of the crisis/hostage negotiation team of the Toronto Police Service Emergency Task Force since 1992, will discuss SBC subjects and indicators, while referencing interesting case studies relevant to law enforcement today.

Collins is currently the Operational Forensic Psychiatrist with the Ontario Provincial Police's Criminal Behaviour Analysis Unit. He consults to criminal justice agencies internationally and his clinical appointment is with the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health, in Toronto. He is an Associate Professor with the Division of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
