Girls and women are not immune from gang violence in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. Females often become involved as girlfriends, but experts say they’re increasingly active participants, carrying guns and drugs or providing their names for houses, cars, credit cards and phones.

Regina police Chief Evan Bray says he doesn’t think banning handguns is the answer to concerns about gun violence, but he believes there’s more room for regulation. Bray, co-chair of a special firearms committee with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, points to federal legislation that tightens security and storage of firearms in businesses as a step in the right direction.

Others believe a government-imposed ban on certain semi-automatics following a March shooting massacre is the best way to combat gun violence.
