As part of our exclusive women in law enforcement podcast series this fall, Blue Line, The Podcast sat down with Durham Regional Police Service’s first female cadet in her Whitby, Ont. home. Maria Iannuzziello, a Durham College professor currently teaching in the Police Foundations program, shared her memories of impactful moments in policing with Blue Line as well as her perspective on the evolution of police training in regards to the academic component.

Acknowledging the need for Canadian police officers to have better mental health support, the third annual Kindful Canada Symposium featured a special panel discussion on “Mental Health and Wellness for First Responders,” presented by Venerable Dr. Bhante Saranapala, Const. Stephanie Nassis and Const. Amy Boudreau.

The Toronto Police Service has seen a great evolution in the roles and numbers of civilian employees in the last 40 years—from administrative duties to direct support for frontline officers. The Special Constable program specifically came into being in July 2018 thanks to the Toronto Police Service Board and Chief Mark Saunders.

Blue Line congratulates Service de police de Terrebonne and all the other winners of its annual Best Dressed Police Vehicle Awards, the only program of its kind in Canada. The program showcases innovative and effective designs for police vehicle graphics and equipment packages and installation. These vehicles are often the most public face of policing and should reflect their communities as well as serve as a symbol of civic pride.

The London Police Service’s ‘Stronger than you Know’ mental health awareness campaign has received a national Silver Leaf Award of Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). The campaign is an internal mental health anti-stigma initiative designed to increase awareness and understanding about mental wellness, and to reduce stigma associated with seeking help when experiencing a mental wellness struggle.

The Steel Spirit art gallery, comprised of artwork submissions by military personnel and first responders, returned to Barrie, Ont. this past October to continue connecting people with the stories behind the art. This year also marks the first time the gallery will be traveling to Nova Scotia.
