The silence and stigma shrouding domestic violence mean those who suffer brain injuries are falling through the cracks of what Paulvan Donkelaar, one of the founders of Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury through Research, or SOAR, calls “an unrecognized public-health crisis in Canada.” Spousal and domestic violence is often not reported to police and it’s hard to determine how many survivors might have experienced traumatic brain injury as a result, said van Donkelaar.

First responders have relied on radios as their primary means of voice communications for several decades. They see the advantages of migrating from radio to smartphones. However, they like the simple yet powerful “push to talk” function in typical radios: Pressing a single button enables you to broadcast to whoever is using the channel, and releasing the button puts you in receiving mode. The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has become the first law enforcement agency in Canada to partner with Axon for its virtual reality (VR) empathy training program through Axon Academy, a network of online and in-person training for law enforcement. HRPS has received 20 Oculus Go headsets to begin training their internal teams and will officially launch their program in the first quarter of 2020.

Ontario has passed new animal welfare legislation that will be enforced by a specialized team of provincial inspectors. The new law, named the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, comes into effect on Jan. 1 and includes stiffer penalties for cruelty offences.
