Deputy Chief James Ramer named interim chief of police in Toronto

The Toronto Police Services Board has announced Deputy Chief James Ramer as interim chief of police in Ontario’s capital in the wake of Chief Mark Saunders’ retirement news. The board has also decided to “commence a comprehensive procurement process to select a firm that will help conduct the search process for next chief.”


Fitness hearing for accused Fredericton shooter and trial to be heard by one jury

A single jury will rule on the mental fitness of accused Fredericton shooter Matthew Raymond, and on a possible subsequent trial for his alleged crimes. Justice Fred Ferguson of the Court of Queen’s Bench made the decision Monday.


Toronto police board member wants better system to respond to those in crisis

The community needs better options than calling police to respond to mental health crises, a Toronto police board member said last week. Uppala Chandrasekera, who’s also co-chair of the board’s mental-health advisory committee, said people need community-based options that include social workers, peer workers and mental health and addictions workers.
