The Ontario government is establishing four new mental health collaborative tables to better support the mental health and well-being of policing, fire, corrections and paramedic services personnel. The tables will help inform actions to change behaviours that stigmatize those struggling with mental health challenges, achieve a healthier work-life balance, promote mental health resiliency, and build awareness of supports, treatments and recovery options.

The scourge of overdose deaths underscores the need for Canada to decriminalize simple possession of hard drugs, the head of the national chiefs of police association said on Thursday. In urging action, Bryan Larkin noted that overdose deaths are outpacing those from the COVID-19 pandemic and homicides in British Columbia and likely Ontario.

Through tips from the public and routine traffic checks, RCMP have made close to a dozen record-breaking drug busts in Alberta alone. Drug-related offences have been on a steady incline since 2015, and the trafficking of methamphetamine is sky-rocketing. According to Statistics Canada, the last report, the rate of meth trafficking rose 17 per cent in 2019, and the opioid offences from 2018 to 2019 increased a whopping 48 per cent.

Investigators from the United States have joined a new team taking a fresh look at the unsolved homicide of Victoria real estate agent Lindsey Buziak and police say there’s movement in the 13-year-old case. Buziak was 24-years-old when she was fatally stabbed while showing a property in Saanich on Feb. 2, 2008.

The RCMP participated in an international cybercrime operation to neutralize Emotet malware. The Cybercrime Investigative Team, in collaboration with RCMP technical operations specialists, led the Canadian component of this complex investigation. In Project CIPHER, which began in March 2020, the RCMP developed specialized techniques making it possible to seize critical digital evidence for the benefit of all investigative partners.

A first-of-its-kind safer supply clinic in Vancouver’s downtown will begin to offer flexible, individual-centred care to people who use a variety of substances as early as this spring. The $5-million, four-year Safer Alternatives for Emergency Response program was one of four British Columbia safer supply projects to share $15 million, the federal government announced.
