A Meaningful Design: 2021 Best Dressed Award winners

Congratulations to all the winners of Blue Line’s 2021 Best Dressed Vehicle Award winners. We strive to showcase innovative and effective designs and look for clear identification, graphic designs that enhance visibility, elements that show directionality of travel, and impressive integration of equipment and controls. Congrats to La Service de police de Saguenay (1st place), Guelph Police Service (2nd place) and Le Service de police de Bromont (3rd place), as well as the University of Toronto Campus Police Department for the Law Enforcement category and the Saskatoon Police Service for the Special Services category.

Retirement: The loss of a sense of belonging

I’m not afraid to admit that I struggled with retirement after 36 years in policing. Quite a bit in fact. On occasion I still do. What I’ve come to realize is that retirement has brought me a lack of a “sense of belonging.” I belonged to the same great police department for most of my adult life. With that I had ring-side seats to the greatest show on earth. Watching from the benches isn’t nearly as gratifying. I’m not whining or complaining about my lot in life, I’m just being honest about the retired life versus a life in policing. I suspect many retirees feel the same.

The year of police SUVs: Results from the 2021 Michigan State Police Vehicle Tests

Every fall the Michigan State Police, in conjunction with the US National Institute of Justice, test the handling and performance of every new police vehicle on the market for the coming year in back-to-back acceleration, braking and lap time tests. The Michigan State Police yearly vehicle test for the 2021 model year will mark the 23rd consecutive year that Blue Line magazine has been compiling and reporting the results of the tests for police category vehicles.
