B.C.'s Human Rights Commissioner launches inquiry into 'hate in all its forms'

British Columbia's Office of the Human Rights Commissioner will examine the rise of hate during the pandemic as the topic of its first public inquiry, Commissioner Kasari Govender said.


N.S. top court: judges must consider systemic racism when sentencing Black offenders

Nova Scotia's top court has ruled that trial judges must consider the historical disadvantages and systemic racism facing Black offenders when issuing sentences. Justice Anne S. Derrick, on behalf of a five-judge Court of Appeal panel, said inquiring about the systemic issues facing African Nova Scotians could help reduce the levels of incarceration in that community.


OPP campaign focuses on loud vehicles

The COVID-19 pandemic gets blamed for a lot of things, and now you can add loud vehicles to the list. As a result, the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police ( OPP) launched Operation Decibel to try and curb the flood of complaints in regards to loud, illegally modified vehicles in the detachment area.

Northern Health issues overdose advisory following spike in northwest B.C.

Northern Health has issued an overdose advisory for northwest B.C., following the detection of unregulated illicit substances sold as heroin. The advisory was a result of a recent increase in overdose activity in Terrace and Smithers areas. The increase may involve the use of a deep blue crystal substance being sold as “heroin,” which when cooked turns purple in colour, said Northern Health in a statement on Aug. 18. » Read now
