The Thunder Bay Police Services Board has announced the selection of Darcy Fleury as the new Chief of Police for the Thunder Bay Police Service. Fleury has 36 years of experience with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and is currently the RCMP District Commander – Chief Superintendent, Central Alberta District based in Edmonton.

The federal government says Mike Duheme will be the interim commissioner of the RCMP, until a replacement is found for Brenda Lucki. Lucki, who was appointed commissioner in April 2018, is retired as of Mar. 17.

The Grande Prairie City Council has approved the Police Commission Bylaw, establishing an independent and arms-length oversight body for the Grande Prairie Municipal Police Service. A local police commission is required for municipal police services, as per the Alberta Police Act.

The report is to be released on March 30 at an event in Truro, N.S., that will be webcast on the commission’s website. In an email, the inquiry said that while the report is still being finalized, it’s anticipated to be “between 2,000 to 3,000 pages,” and there will also be an executive summary with an overview.

Police officers can be confronted with potentially life-threatening dangers seemingly without warning and these threats can fully evolve within fractions of a second. These dangers can challenge police officers during all types of the work that they perform, and the research clearly shows that there is no duty that police officers engage in that is completely safe from the potential for a lethal confrontation. Being a law enforcement officer comes with a variety of risks. The world is changing and the escalating anger and violence—among other issues—provide an environment that is often difficult to navigate. Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma and a myriad of other existing or forgotten mental health conditions can surface when a person is exhausted and overworked. Traditionally, police officers don’t seek counselling or admit to substance abuse problems because of stigmas that still surround those issues. This fear can lead to a host of mental health issues.
