Canada’s premiers will meet with the association representing police chiefs this week over the concern of a recent spike in violence across the country. The chief of the Nunavik Police Service says mobile crisis intervention services are needed in every community in the region due to the high number of mental health and alcohol-related calls officers are responding to. Larose made those comments in an interview Friday following a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, where Gov. Gen. Mary Simon named him an officer of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

The RCMP say a regimental funeral will be held this week for one of its Alberta-based officers who died in a crash while heading to help another officer. The funeral for Const. Harvinder Dhami, a member of the Strathcona County detachment east of Edmonton, will be held Thursday morning at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park, Alta., and will be preceded by a procession from Bethel Lutheran Church.

Research has shown that certain individuals may be more susceptible to false memories, and they can be produced in a laboratory setting. The factors that make people more susceptible to imagination inflation are memory problems, difficulties with reality monitoring and the ability to produce vivid imagery. Individuals who are susceptible to false memories may have a “source monitoring deficit” – incorrect judgements about the origin or source of information. A false memory is highly dependent on the individual being able to create or retrieve misinformation. By Peter Collins.

The overall contribution of people with serious mental illness to violent crimes is only about three to four per cent, and most individuals diagnosed with a serious mental health disorder are no more likely to commit an act of violence (with or without a firearm) than the general population. However, individuals with the most severe psychiatric diseases are at a heightened risk for violent behaviour when untreated for their symptoms. There is a crucial need for members of law enforcement to understand this relationship in order to prevent creating a more powerful stigma. Discussing mental illness openly works to reduce the unfair stigma by bringing the subject into the light. By Matthew H. Logan.
