‘Broken system:’ Policing shortages facing N.B. communities highlight national issue

Some New Brunswick communities are being forced to find creative solutions to law enforcement because of RCMP policing shortages, a phenomenon experts say is symbolic of what much of small-town Canada is experiencing.

County of Brant Municipal law enforcement officers to implement body-worn cameras

Beginning May 2, 2023, County of Brant uniformed municipal law enforcement officers began wearing body-worn cameras. The purpose of this initiative is to increase transparency, accountability and to enhance public trust. “The County has six (6) cameras in service,” said Greg Bergeron, Manager of Enforcement and Regulatory Services. “We are excited to use this new technology."

Province says RCMP should leave Surrey, B.C., to local force for safety reasons

The British Columbia government is recommending the City of Surrey continue its transition to an independent police force in what is another rebuke of the RCMP’s ability to conduct local policing in Canada. The provincial government’s recommendation Friday to support the municipal Surrey Police Service comes despite the wishes of the Metro Vancouver city’s new mayor and council to revert to the RCMP.

Manitoba Government investing in enhanced bail, community supervision and electronic monitoring programs

The Manitoba government is enhancing programs for supervision and services to support bail and community-based sentences, while also launching a new electronic monitoring program for high-risk offenders released to the community, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen has announced.

Awards recognize outstanding B.C. Sheriff Service members

One hundred B.C. sheriffs received the most prestigious national decoration for their profession this past weekend. The Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal (POESM) recognizes peace officers who have more than 20 years of outstanding service in protecting the safety and security of the Canadian public.
