Twenty years after joining the Treaty Three Police Service (T3PS), Cheryl Gervais has reached a new level in her policing career: Chief of Police. “At no time growing up as an Indigenous girl did I think that I would be here,” she said Friday from her Kenora office.

The study, titled “Canadian Women in Policing: A National Exploration of Women Officers’ Experiences,” is being conducted by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) in partnership with Ontario Tech University and endorsed by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). The study aims to bridge the information gap concerning the challenges and opportunities faced by women in law enforcement in Canada and shed light on the pivotal importance of gender equity within Canadian police services.

In Canada, some unionized employees are prohibited from striking under provincial labour laws often referred to as essential services legislation. This includes certain first responders, such as police officers. Kelly Wong of SPS, and Tina Taphouse, an Indigenous artist, about how law enforcement agencies can authentically connect with local Indigenous peoples while also understanding their history and why there may be a negative reaction to police officers. Studies have shown that women in leadership positively influence policy and culture to result in better outcomes for community and public safety as a whole.
