Winnipeg’s police chief is set to retire next year after serving in the role since 2016. Chief Danny Smyth told the police board he plans to retire on Sept. 3, 2024, after nearly four decades with the force, seven of those as chief.

Linda Lee Oland said today her 16-member group heard updates this week from the federal and Nova Scotia governments and the RCMP on their work to implement the inquiry’s 130 recommendations. The chair of the progress monitoring committee didn’t offer details but said her group will publish a report on its website in January about the two days of meetings.

Access to Justice: Integrated Services for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence was launched at the York Regional Police (YRP) on Dec. 4 in conjunction with the York Region Centre for Community Safety (YRCCS) and 482 Collective. The campaign will see increased advertising, including bus ads and billboards, to encourage victims to “Recognize, Report and Prevent” intimate partner violence.

To stem the increase in auto thefts, YRP spent 2021 targeting theft groups operating in Ontario and Quebec. These highly organized enterprises include spotters who identify vehicles for theft, the vehicle thieves themselves and transporters who either drive the cars or send them by rail to the Port of Montreal.
