Police chief, who faced calls to resign after refusing to search landfill, to retire

Winnipeg’s police chief is set to retire next year after serving in the role since 2016. Chief Danny Smyth told the police board he plans to retire on Sept. 3, 2024, after nearly four decades with the force, seven of those as chief.


No complaints with RCMP, government response to N.S. mass shooting recommendations

Linda Lee Oland said today her 16-member group heard updates this week from the federal and Nova Scotia governments and the RCMP on their work to implement the inquiry’s 130 recommendations. The chair of the progress monitoring committee didn’t offer details but said her group will publish a report on its website in January about the two days of meetings.


Safer streets for Edmonton through investments in EPS

Due to rising acts of violence, the government is taking direct action to keep Edmontonians safe. By investing in the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) to support their efforts to recruit, train and deploy 50 new officers, high-crime areas like transit centres and the downtown core will see increased police presence.


York Regional Police partnership, campaign aims to increase reporting of intimate partner violence

Access to Justice: Integrated Services for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence was launched at the York Regional Police (YRP) on Dec. 4 in conjunction with the York Region Centre for Community Safety (YRCCS) and 482 Collective. The campaign will see increased advertising, including bus ads and billboards, to encourage victims to “Recognize, Report and Prevent” intimate partner violence.
