Halifax approves changes to volunteer honorariums

Halifax regional council has voted to make several changes to the way it doles out honorariums to volunteer firefighters in the municipality. The money that volunteers receive for each point they accumulate is to be doubled, while honorariums will be paid quarterly rather than annually. >> Read full article

Kenora firefighters given a wage increase

Council in Kenora, Ont., is on the hook for increases to wages and benefits amounting to nearly $240,000 to settle a recent arbitration award to the Kenora Professional Firefighters Association for 2014 to 2016. Council will amend the 2016 operating budget, however some say this increase is not sustainable. >> Read full article

The City of Brampton, Ont., and its fire chief have been accused of unfair labour practices by the association representing firefighters. The association is calling for, among other things, a “cease and desist” order and payment of damages. >> Read full article

Home in fatal fire not zoned for rooming house use

The Hamilton house in which three people died in a fire on Saturday was not zoned or licensed to be used as a lodging home. The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.
