Rob Patterson, chief of the Malahat Volunteer Fire Department on Vancouver Island and a vocal advocate for improved safety on the crash-prone stretch of highway, died Monday. A cause of death has not been announced.
Patterson had been among the first on the scene of countless crashes on the Trans-Canada Highway. He grew frustrated at witnessing the lives lost in head-on crashes and began advocating for median barriers. Patterson didn’t mince words when expressing that another death could have been prevented if safety improvements were made. He pointed to statistics that showed fatality rates have dropped in areas where barriers were installed.

In the wake of massive flooding and tornado touchdowns in Windsor, Ont., in 2016, the city’s fire chief is again pushing for a mass emergency online notification system. Chief Bruce Montone says the proposal was scrapped in 2016 during city budget talks, but that the system should be brought online in 2017.

It was 10 p.m. on a cold Wednesday night in November and the tones went off for a vehicle fire in the southwest part of town. Just another vehicle fire, thought Chief Jamie Coutts. The incident, it turned out, was the furthest thing from a run-of-the-mill call, and a good reminder to the members of the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service to always be prepared.

A Toronto law firm is remembering one of its partners as a "vibrant and wonderful person" after news that a family of four died in a fire near Peterborough, ON. Police said the fire broke out early Christmas Eve in a large cottage on Stoney Lake.

Police say someone threw an incendiary device at a home in west end Halifax, causing a fire that forced a couple and their two children to flee. Police say they were called to Chebucto Road at about 11:30 p.m. Monday and learned that a white man pulled up in a white sedan and threw the device at the building.

One person is dead following a four-alarm fire at a seniors' residence in Villeray, Que., that was not equipped with a sprinkler system. The fire broke out early Monday afternoon on the third floor of the residence. Several occupants were trapped on their balconies and had to be rescued with ladders, the fire department said.
