Union levies fines, suspends two-hatters

Four firefighters with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services in Ontario, who also work paid on-call in a composite department in nearby Halton Hills, have been suspended by their association and face increasing fines if they continue to serve the community in which they live. The ruling, by a trial board of the IAFF, has implications for other municipalities that use career firefighters from other jurisdictions as paid on-call workers.


Fort McMurray names new chief

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has appointed Jody Butz, assistant deputy chief for Regional Emergency Services, as the new fire chief for Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo. Butz played a key role during the Horse River wildfire in 2016; he takes the top job on Feb. 27.
