Proceedings begin for firefighters charged with fraud

The president of the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association says it’s important to be in court to see the entire scope of the case against Warren Atkinson and Colin Grieve, who are charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000, money laundering and attempting to obstruct justice. Police allege the pair kept $250,000 that was supposed to go into a fund to help families of firefighters who had died of work-related injuries or diseases. The OPFFA is suing Atkinson and Grieve for $4 million; the two have launched a $12 million countersuit alleging a smear campaign. The next court appearance is April 26.

Ontario’s chief coroner says the request is being considered.
