The City of Thunder Bay says an interest arbitration ruling on a three-year collective agreement awarded Tuesday will add to the increasing costs of providing emergency services to the public. The city said in a press release firefighters have been awarded wage increases of 2.39 per cent for 2015, 2.27 per cent for 2016 and 2.27 per cent this year, moving firefighter salaries just ahead of city police.

Firefighters in Hamilton, Ont., are filing work-related cancer claims at twice the provincial rate. According to data provided to CBC News from Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, 22 firefighters were considered for work-related cancer benefits under the board's presumptive legislation for every 100,000 people in Hamilton. The provincial per capita rate is 11 per 100,000 people in Ontario.

An Alberta woman has demanded a review after she was billed more than $28, 000 by private fire fighting crews for a blaze that gutted her one-storey home last April. The invoice from North West Fire and Rescue lists costs associated with a response of about a dozen fire trucks, including gas mileage for the vehicles and firefighter wages.

The federal government announced $80 million in funding, distributed over the next five years, to create an annual Firefighters’ National Memorial Day. The memorial day will fall on the second Sunday of September each year, serving as a tribute to public safety officers who have died in the line of duty. This year, Firefighters’ National Memorial Day falls on Sept. 10.

Some 2,000 residents of a remote Manitoba Indigenous community have fled a large forest fire that threatened their homes Tuesday evening. The Manitoba government told The Canadian Press the fire is about 770 square kilometres in size, coming within 800 metres of some homes on the edge of Wasagamack, Man.
