Thunder Bay seeks to overturn firefighter arbitration award

The City of Thunder Bay says an interest arbitration ruling on a three-year collective agreement awarded Tuesday will add to the increasing costs of providing emergency services to the public. The city said in a press release firefighters have been awarded wage increases of 2.39 per cent for 2015, 2.27 per cent for 2016 and 2.27 per cent this year, moving firefighter salaries just ahead of city police.


Hamilton firefighters claiming cancer at higher rates

Firefighters in Hamilton, Ont., are filing work-related cancer claims at twice the provincial rate. According to data provided to CBC News from Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, 22 firefighters were considered for work-related cancer benefits under the board's presumptive legislation for every 100,000 people in Hamilton. The provincial per capita rate is 11 per 100,000 people in Ontario.


Private fire department fines Alberta woman more than $28,000

An Alberta woman has demanded a review after she was billed more than $28, 000 by private fire fighting crews for a blaze that gutted her one-storey home last April. The invoice from North West Fire and Rescue lists costs associated with a response of about a dozen fire trucks, including gas mileage for the vehicles and firefighter wages.
