Volunteer firefighter dies battling Alberta wildfire

A volunteer firefighter from southern Alberta died Tuesday night after battling a blaze that straddled the Saskatchewan border. RCMP announced Wednesday that James Hargrave, a 34-year-old volunteer firefighter with Cypress County Fire, died while working to fight a wildfire that started near Hilda, Alta.


Grass fires force evacuations in Alberta and Saskatchewan

Communities in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan issued evacuation orders Tuesday, as wildfires spread due to gusting winds exceeding 100 km/h. RCMP went door-to-door in Gleichen, Alta. – which declared a local state of emergency Tuesday – telling about 500 residents to evacuate. The town of Leader, Sask., also declared a local state of emergency and evacuated more than 800 residents.


British Columbia commissions independent wildfire review

The British Columbia government's response to devastating floods and wildfires this summer will soon be examined in an independent review commissioned by the province. Communities faced flooding in May and June, which was followed by the province’s worst recorded wildfire season. The fires displaced 65,000 people and destroyed more than 1.2 million hectares of land.


Fatal ammonia leaks prompts state of emergency

Officials in Fernie, B.C., told CBC News that three people were killed in an ammonia leak at a hockey arena on Tuesday, while doing maintenance work at the facility. Emergency crews were called to the Fernie Memorial Arena after the leak was detected, and the building and surrounding area was evacuated.
