Gord Ditchburn, president of the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Association, writes in the October issue of Canadian Firefighter about an awareness campaign aimed at first responders in British Columbia called “Share it. Don’t wear it.” The committee behind the campaign selected particular images and words to represent the mental health challenges firefighters face in their day-to-day work.

Michael Laughlin knows about perseverance. The 37-year-old was involved in a motorcycle accident in June 2016 near Kingston that eventually resulted in his right leg being amputated. He spent a year and a half in recovery and in December 2017 resumed full-time firefighting duties, becoming the first above-knee amputee firefighter in Canada. A massive fire consumed a pig barn in Quinte West, Ont., Tuesday, Dec. 11, killing at least 1,300 animals. The community's Fire Chief John Whelan said they got the call around 1 p.m. and quickly called in resources from neighbouring communities to help battle the blaze.
