For every situation you encounter in your career, you bring to it the learning and experiences from your past. You need to train the way that you respond in real life, and that means not isolating training to the technical skills you need for one specific type of response, but instead looking at each situation holistically.
This is where we need to ask ourselves, what have we learned from our training in ice rescue, fire, high angle rescue, psychological first aid, emergency medical responder training? How can we apply these to the situation we are currently facing?

A good situation report (sit-rep) from the first arriving apparatus officer can set the tone for how well a scene plays out. It is not the deciding factor for the outcome of a situation, but it is the starting point for incoming units to hear what the big picture looks like and what the first-in officer’s game plan is. The observations and decisions don’t stop with the initial size-up and our observation skills as officers should be always on.

A structure fire at a home in Chatham-Kent has resulted in damages pegged at $500,000. The cause of the blaze, which happened Sunday at about 8:30 p.m. at a home on Base Road, has been deemed accidental by Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services. CBC News reports.

In Ontario, fire and emergency crews remained at the scene of a “massive” fire at a truck centre in south London into Monday evening, stamping out stubborn hot spots. More than three dozen London firefighters responded at about 3:15 p.m. Monday to battle the blaze at the Flying M Truck Service centre, the London fire department said. The London Free Press reports.

The residents in RM of Piney, Man., are in awe of the generosity that has followed a brutal theft from one of their fire halls last week. The overnight disappearance of saws, generators, and extrication tools from the Woodridge Fire Hall last Wednesday originally caused immense frustration but, according to Fire Chief Bill Stowe, those feelings have since given way to gratefulness.
