There is one blaze of glory that Chief Bill Boyes and his Brampton Fire and Emergency Services colleagues are surely glad to see. Through the early ages of auto extrication and up until present day, we as rescuers and those before us have always faced new challenges in the automotive industry. We had the hand tools, then came the come-along and chains. Vehicles got tougher and stronger, so we answered with air chisels and reciprocating saws. Then the age of hydraulic tools arrived, first-hand powered then soon succeeded by the power-driven models. The observations and decisions don’t stop with the initial size-up and our observation skills as officers should always be on. A good situation report (sit-rep) from the first arriving apparatus officer can set the tone for how well a scene plays out. It is not the deciding factor for the outcome of a situation, but it is the starting point for incoming units to hear what the big picture looks like and what the first-in officer’s game plan is.
