Ontario launches its first mobile live fire training unit

Ontario launched the first of two new mobile live fire training units today. The new mobile training units are part of the province’s plan to expand and modernize access to fire fighting training.


Flooding prompts state of emergency in eastern Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s Emergency Management Office has declared a state of emergency for Victoria County in Cape Breton after heavy rainfall washed out roads. Many roads are flooded and impassable in Nova Scotia’s northeastern counties and across Cape Breton Island.


Dryer malfunction sparks Winnipeg house fire

A house fire in Winnipeg Tyndall Park area on Monday was caused by the malfunction of a clothes dryer. Crews with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) were called to the fire on Sumter Crescent just before 6:20 p.m.


Sudbury fire displaces seven people

In Sudbury, Ont., seven residents were displaced Tuesday night following a fire on Whissell Avenue. Officials say that the call came in around 8:20 p.m. and three different stations responded to the second story fire.

Dispatches: The wheels on the bus

Burnout: we’re all familiar with the term and many of us have experienced working ourselves to the point of exhaustion. It happens when we’re trying to do it all while simultaneously ignoring the subtle signs our body is sending to indicate that we’re about to crash. Instead we push harder by working longer hours, not taking breaks, having multiple tasks on the go at the same time, and ultimately failing to accomplish much of anything, or at least not to the fullest extent we’re capable of. Preparing future firefighters

When we first join the fire service, one of the last things that crosses our mind is retirement or leaving the department. I haven’t looked at hanging my gear up just yet and haven’t even begun to think about the ‘final approach phase’. The thought of leaving the ‘front seat’ or moving forward in the ranks also hasn’t been something that I have considered or even needed to. I still enjoy being directly involved with my team as a captain and getting hands on with bringing a scene to a stable outcome.
