Wildfires are becoming increasingly severe and unpredictable, but a new paper by UBC researchers and collaborators suggests a way forward. The authors reviewed fire management practices and recent wildfires in Canada and are recommending the revival of cultural burning, while moving towards Indigenous-led fire stewardship to better manage wildfire risks and promote healthy ecosystems.

B.C. is expanding the use of its wireless emergency alerts to include imminent threats from floods and wildfires, the province’s public safety minister announced Tuesday. Mike Farnworth announced the change while giving an update on the upcoming flood and fire season.

For Natalie Cormier, the threat of fire at her Grand-Barachois shop is constantly in the back of her mind. Cormier’s business, Able Canvas, burned to the ground in June 2020 and had to be completely rebuilt. The Office of the Fire Marshal determined the cause was likely electrical, but with many suspicious incidents in the area, she worries next time it could burn intentionally.

There is a story inspired by the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 winter Olympics that stands out above many others. Regardless of what nation you belong to, this story and its outcome will always be remembered as the miracle on ice. Let’s start near the beginning, with Herb Brooks, sitting at home on the sofa with his father, watching his hockey team win an Olympic gold medal. The year is 1960 and after making the previous two Olympic teams, a young and deflated Brooks was the last cut for this year’s team. Ever since that moment, Brooks was determined to move from player to coach, eventually coaching a U.S. hockey team. By James R. Rychard

At a recent fire, we were confronted with this very question. Our initial update included the report of a basement fire, people trapped and explosions coming from the basement area. On approach we noticed smoke coming from the front door and occupants exiting the house. We were advised by the homeowner, who had self evacuated, that a woman and her child were still in the basement. The hose line was redirected to a side entrance where an exterior door was cut into the side of the building. This led us to a shared room full of pressurized smoke. The hose line was moved into position, and while the fire was being extinguished, a simultaneous rescue effort was underway. The child was rescued up and out of the basement in a matter of seconds. The woman, weighing 385 pounds, was not as easy. By Jared Newcombe

When we first join the fire service, one of the last things that crosses our mind is retirement or leaving the department. I haven’t looked at hanging my gear up just yet and haven’t even begun to think about the ‘final approach phase’. The thought of leaving the ‘front seat’ or moving forward in the ranks also hasn’t been something that I have considered or even needed to. I still enjoy being directly involved with my team as a captain and getting hands on with bringing a scene to a stable outcome. I think I have another 20 years in me, if the body can keep up to the younger recruits replacing the ranks every year. By Jason Clark
