At the recent Atlantic Fire Leadership Conference, Dr. Robert Krause shared the findings of his study into 176 LODD firefighter fatalities. The top two reasons, accounting for 75 per cent of the loss of life, were sub-optimal personnel readiness and inadequate preparation for/anticipation of adverse events on the fire ground. His bottom line: “Training is the way out of this.”

Not having the basement fully underground allows for builders to install windows for natural light in this space which can interpret to small windows with sill heights inside the basements anywhere from five to six feet and higher. Hoarding presents a unique challenge and fire risk in the community. In May 2020, Elaine Birchall, a hoarding behaviour and intervention specialist for over 18 years, spoke to Fire Chief Tom DeSorcy about best practices for how to proceed when encountering a hoarding situation on a call. Birchall covers what defines hoarding and how to recognize it, misconceptions around hoarding and how to approach the people involved in a nonjudgmental and sensitive manner.

Training officer Ed Brouwer shares his stories that illustrate the three roles of the training officer: instructor, coach and mentor. An instructor is one who teaches something. A coach helps bring greater performance in a specific area. A mentor is a bit different. Mentorship can involve training, but it is more like passing down knowledge of how things are done.
