Boots on the ground, eyes in the sky: satellites increasingly used to fight wildfires

Eyes in the sky are becoming an increasingly important tool for boots on the ground when it comes to fighting wildfires, experts say, as data from a growing number of satellites give firefighters new tools to predict fire behaviour and analyze its consequences. "It's being more and more adopted," said wildfire expert Mike Flannigan of Thompson Rivers University. "In the old days, almost no one was using satellites. Now they're being used more and more."

CUPE firefighters demonstrate at board meeting in Quebec

Last week, about twenty firefighters who are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) voiced their discontent with their employer while a Régie incendie de l’Alliance des Grandes-Seigneuries board meeting was going on. The unjustified and heavy-handed dismissal of a lieutenant and three firefighters touched off a firestorm this week. These terminations were approved at the board meeting.

Ten years later, Orillia man visits firefighter who saved his life

Ten years after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest on Park Street, an Orillia man visited with the firefighters who saved his life on that fateful spring day. Joe Bladek, 42, was out for a walk with his wife, mother-in-law, and eight-month-old son on Mother’s Day in 2013 when he crumpled to the pavement near Calverley Street.

Back to Basics: Desensitizing firefighters - Part 2

In our continuing series of desensitizing firefighters, we are going to focus on the topic of personal protective equipment (PPE). Although this may seem like a very basic area to look at, it is actually the opposite. PPE forms the nucleus, or the foundation, upon which everything else falls upon. When we look at the series of mishaps or dominoes that are lined up in a chain of events, much of the time, PPE was missing or was not used as it needs to be – thus leading to the bad outcome. Psychological PPE: The fire service’s Challenger

For some organizations in the fire service industry, they rest a little more on their laurels than they should. They can have the mindset, similar to NASA’s “we can do anything”, and in response breed a sense of over-confidence. When applying willful blindness, it becomes vital that leaders, managers and supervisors choose not to look the other way when issues surface. By James Rychard. » Read More...

Fit for Duty: Leadership and fitness

As a recently promoted chief officer, it was interesting to hear someone be surprised that I would continue to work out each day. Should your department’s chiefs continue to work out and promote fitness? By Sherry Dean. » Read More...

Recipe rescue: Fire up the grill

There is much to love about summer, but for me there is no better way to cap a sun-soaked day than firing up the grill for dinner. Of course, as firefighters we love fire, but there is just something primal and social about cooking over open flame. No matter what you are about to throw on the grill there is no easier way to build flavour into it than by using a marinade. By Patrick Mathieu. » Read More...
