Canadian forest fire centre responds to unprecedented wildfire season

Weather maps hang on the walls and precipitation reports flash across screens in the Winnipeg office where major decisions about Canada's battle against an unprecedented wildfire season are made. Inside the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre headquarters in Manitoba's capital, just east of the exact longitudinal centre of Canada, there are discussions on how best to battle blazes from coast to coast.

Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services receives drone grant

Port Coquitlam Fire department has new life safety tools at its disposal with the help of a provincial grant. Canadian firefighters support Ukrainians through organization

Every day, people of Ukraine are suffering at the hands of Russian aggressors. Emergency first responders, hospital staff and aid workers are working tirelessly to save lives on the front lines and in war-impacted zones, and in many cases have become targets themselves. Personal protective equipment, medical supplies, rescue tools and hospital diagnostic and surgical equipment are needed now more than ever.

N.L. firefighters train at 'fire school'

About 250 professional and volunteer firefighters met in central Newfoundland this week to avail of 22 courses being offered by the provincial government's fire services division, but the education goes beyond just the courses being offered. There were simulated rescues, live fires, vehicle rescues, incident command setup, ladder raises, marine firefighting and training on how to deal with wildfires — along with networking with other departments.

The 72-hour fallacy: Preparing your communities for the unexpected

In emergency management, it’s important to know where initiatives or directives originated from, and they should be consistently re-evaluated to ensure that they are still current and required. The 72-hour preparedness rule came to fruition during World War I as a directive given from national levels of governance. There were requirements to be self-sufficient due to competing priorities from national defense. By Kaitlin Secord. » Read More...

Plan, prepare and practice

Most firefighters like myself have been around when a new apparatus or other piece of equipment comes into the hall. A lot of times when we receive a new fire apparatus, we go out on the streets of our district, drive it around and work with it in different capacities. What do you inherit?

In researching the topic of transgenerational trauma, or trauma passed down to our children, it was clear that the both research and conclusions are ambiguous. Should you wish to tread with me through the difficult task at hand, the result will be a more prepared and informed fire service that can work towards shaking its unimodal diagnostic approach and lead to improved mental wellness inclusivity within the fire service.
