Markham Fire and Emergency Services becomes first large municipal fire department to transition fire trucks to non-toxic bio-based gel

Markham Fire & Emergency Services (MFES) announced it is transitioning its entire fire apparatus fleet to an innovative non-toxic bio-based gel to improve the health and safety of its firefighters, residents and the environment. By adopting the new gel, MFES becomes the first large municipal fire department in the world to make the switch.


Small forest fire put out in Oka provincial park as Quebec fire season starts early

A spokesman for Quebec’s forest fire prevention society, known as SOPFEU, said the fire that broke out Saturday in Oka park was likely caused by a discarded cigarette.


Ontario prepares for upcoming wildland fire season

Ontario’s wildland fire season officially began April 1 and this year the Ontario government is adding new firefighting positions to ensure the people and resources are in place to protect communities. The province is also offering a payment incentive for fire rangers and critical support staff this season and has purchased new equipment to help manage forest fires.


Quebec firefighters who drowned in water rescue lacked training, says workplace safety board

A lack of training, preventive planning and poor response management resulted in the deaths of two firefighters last year, says Quebec’s workplace health and safety board.
