Research comes to the rescue to make firefighters’ clothing safer

A pair of new University of Alberta studies show how to make firefighters’ clothing safer to wear, maintain and manufacture. One study revealed that some fibres used in the protective gear break down when exposed to warm water, showing what can happen to the garments over time, during real-life firefighting scenarios and laundering.


Calgary Fire Department first in Canada to receive Pierce’s electric fire truck

Calgary Fire Department plans to put a Pierce Volterra Electric Pumper into service this summer, the first placement of the company’s electric model in Canada. Calgary is the fourth department to receive the Volterra, following Madison, Wis., Gilbert, Ariz., and Portland, Ore.


Midland and Penetanguishene consider moving away from joint fire service

The towns of Midland and Penetanguishene have issued a joint request for proposals to determine whether to continue with their current shared fire service model or pursue a partial or complete separation of operations. The study will examine the specific needs of each community, including a thorough evaluation of current fire services in both municipalities, and investigate different options for the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient performance.


Wildland firefighters have retention problem, not prepared for the season: AUPE

Wildland firefighters are going into the 2024 wildfire season unprepared, said the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) in a news release. The AUPE called attention to what they described as a retention and recruitment crisis experienced by the province, with experienced workers moving to other agencies including the government of British Columbia and Parks Canada based on better wages, benefits and working conditions.
