A new study found the record-breaking 2023 wildfire season in Canada was enabled by climate change. The study, published in Nature Communications, said, “It is inescapable that extreme heat and moisture deficits enabled the record-breaking 2023 fire season.”

Heavy rain in parts of British Columbia over the weekend has lowered wildfire activity in the southern part of the province, but firefighters say strong winds are creating some tree hazards for crews. The BC Wildfire Service says in its latest update that the number of active blazes in the province has fallen to around 311, continuing a downward trend from Friday when there were about 340 fires burning.

A new study suggests four 2023 wildfires in mine-impacted areas around Yellowknife, N.W.T. potentially contributed up to half of the arsenic that wildfires emit globally each year. The work, a collaboration between researchers at the University of Waterloo and Nipissing University, estimated that the 2023 wildfires potentially released between 69 and 183 tonnes of arsenic, the University of Waterloo reported in a press statement.

The Saint John Fire Department celebrated 50 years of dedicated rescue service on August 26. Though the department itself has been operating since 1786, in 1973 Fire Chief Percy Clarke recognized the need for specialized fire-based rescue services, and established SJFC Rescue 3, the city reported in a press release.
