"If you are working for someone else, you can give 200% every day and you won’t see that in return. When you work for yourself, putting in that same time and energy provides you endless value." He says.
Nav had been searching for the right business to step into for two years when he came across Leader Hardware. Along the way, his search included assessing businesses such as motels, resorts and restaurants, but he was drawn to the Building Supply world because of his extensive background in construction. He possessed a lot of knowledge that would aid him in his transition into business ownership in this sector.
The journey to ownership was demanding, requiring Nav to balance his job while meticulously evaluating potential businesses. In October 2023, he made the bold decision to leave his job and commit fully to his entrepreneurial goal. In December of 2023, he had his first visit to Leader Hardware, and from there, the process of acquiring the business began, with ownership taking place in May of 2024.
Choosing an independent business was a deliberate move for Nav, who values the autonomy and transparency it offers.
"Running an independent business means every decision is yours. It's about having the freedom to shape your own path," he explains.
While it has been a challenge coming in as the new person to an already established business, Nav has enjoyed getting to know people in the industry. Suppliers have shown him support and have made an honest effort to provide the best options possible to Nav as he embarks on his new business.
The community of Landmark has also embraced Nav warmly, offering encouragement and understanding as he adapts to his dual roles as both a newcomer and business owner.
"The community has been incredibly supportive as we navigate the business, there’s never an issue if we need extra time to get something or work out kinks. They understand it’s new for us, and they are rooting for our success."
Looking ahead, Nav envisions expanding Leader Hardware's footprint from 3,500 to 6,000 square feet to utilize for retail and warehouse space. His ambitions also include plans for a potential second location where his family, who are some of his biggest supporters, can play a pivotal role.
When asked what advice Nav would give to others who dream of owning their own business, he said committing is the first step.
"You have to commit. I put a significant amount of my savings into obtaining this business, I had to take the risk to make this happen. Many people worry so much about failing, that it stops them from taking the leap. Taking the risk is what drives you to work hard. If failure happens along the way, you learn so much from those moments, and they propel you forward the next time an opportunity comes."
Congratulations Nav on your new path as a business owner. We look forward to seeing what you do as you continue this journey.
