Trail Building Supplies Improves Yard Efficiency with New Cantilever Racks
Trail Building Supplies has successfully completed the installation of cantilever racks in their lumber yard, a project initiated by Manager Gary Fletcher.
Gary first saw the racks in use during a visit to Kenroc Building Materials in Edmonton...
Impressed by their efficiency, he inquired about where he could reach out for the same racks for Trail Building Supplies. He discovered the racks were from Sexton vendor, Johnston Equipment, and he got in contact with the Johnston team to start the plans for Trail.
Previously, Trail Building Supplies had primarily been stacking lumber in their yard. After letting go of some leased land that had been used for additional storage, racking would be an effective way to increase storage capacity without expanding the yard's physical size. This would open up space to accommodate extra goods that would be coming back to the lumber yard to be stored.
Gary's advice to others looking to add additions such as racking to their yards is to plan ahead. "It's important to plan the end result and consider the ground you're installing on," he said. "We hired a 3rd party company to engineer the footing by installing four foot wide, one foot thick continuous concrete slab under the racks to ensure the racks would remain level and stable long term out in the yard."
Timing is another important element, as any work to reinforce the racks such as concrete slabs will require additional time to be ready for the installment day. The full project entailed installing three sections of racking, spanning 100, 260, and 60 feet. Thirty days after the initial preparation and installation of the concrete slabs, Johnston Equipment's team arrived to install the new racks.
The installation was a smooth experience thanks to the Johnston team and planning by Trail. So far, the racks have paid off, providing benefits that trickle down to Trail customers. "Products are now easily accessible, with no need to move items around to get to something else," says Gary. "It saves our staff time and helps them get what they need quickly and efficiently."
Four steps for a successful employee performance review
Conducting effective performance reviews is essential for boosting employee morale, enhancing performance, and fostering professional development. Here are some strategies to make these reviews more impactful:
Provide Constructive Feedback: Focus on offering actionable advice rather than just pointing out shortcomings. Be specific about what can be improved and show that you are prepared to help by having practical solutions or resources at your disposal.
Encourage Dialogue: A performance review should be a two-way conversation. Encourage employees to discuss their achievements, challenges, and career aspirations. Listen actively, and remain open to suggestions your employee may have for you in helping them perform at their best.
Align Goals with Development: Set goals that not only align with company goals, but that can help the employee in their development.
Follow Up and Support: Performance reviews should be the beginning of a continuous development process. Schedule regular check-ins both formal and informal to monitor progress, provide support, and ensure goals are on track.
