Seasonal Transitions and Winter Preparedness

Moving from fall into winter is one of the most challenging shifts because conditions change fast, routines need adjusting, and familiar spaces begin to behave differently. Seasonal transitions should be part of how we plan, work, and stay aware all year. When we expect change, we respond faster and prevent incidents.

Here are the key safety reminders as your business transitions into winter:

Seasonal clutter increases risk.
Winter brings wet floors, bulky clothing, holiday shipments, and shifts in how materials move through our spaces. Housekeeping becomes even more important. Keep walkways clear, store items properly, and clean up packaging or debris as you go. Good housekeeping reduces slip, trip, and pinch point hazards.

Equipment and vehicles need seasonal checks.
Cold temperatures change how equipment and vehicles perform, so take the time to make sure everything is working the way it should. Check that wipers, defrosters, heaters, lights, fluids, mirrors, and cameras are clear and functioning. For any equipment operators, pay attention to how brakes and controls respond in colder conditions and encourage reporting for anything that feels off.

Dress and plan for the environment.
Cold stress impacts everyone, not only those working outside all day. Even a short outdoor task can reduce grip strength or slow reaction time. Wear layers, gloves, and proper footwear are all items that can help eliminate risk, as well as building small warm up breaks into routines when needed.

Check road conditions and build in extra time.
Winter weather can shift within minutes which can change visibility, traction, and travel speed. Encourage your employees to check provincial road information service for closures or warnings.
