Heat pumps outperform gas even in coldest temperatures, finds Canadian researcher

A study, published in the journal Joule, examined the efficiency of air-source heat pumps in sub-zero scenarios down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. The research was led by Canadian Duncan Gibb, a senior advisor at the Brussels-based Regulatory Assistance Project, and pulled 2,760 measurements showing heat pump performance data in Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Canada.


Ontario expanding skilled trades training for Indigenous People in Thunder Bay

The Ontario government is expanding Kiikenomaga Kikenjigewen Employment and Training Services (KKETS) training programs to include in-class apprenticeship training for carpentry.


Alberta government funds 2,000 new trade apprenticeship spots

Alberta is adding an extra $12.4 million this year to create more apprenticeship seats to meet surging demand. The funding is on top of the $15 million over three years announced earlier this year that added more than 1,000 extra apprenticeship spaces.


B.C. adds 12K jobs in September as demand for construction workers booms

B.C. has added 25,700 jobs to the economy in September for the second consecutive month of job growth, according to Statistics Canada data released on Oct. 6. Demand was highest in B.C.'s construction industry, which saw an increase of 12,600 jobs.

Party walls are not such a party anymore

I have worked on many semi-detached homes over the years, and it baffles me why we don’t have some sort of policy to deal with party-wall construction. Our current system relies upon consent in the form of a party wall agreement from the adjoining neighbours to do any permitted work on the party wall itself. A party-wall agreement is a document intended to stipulate terms of construction and remediation if any damages occur. The problem is that now it is being weaponized to hold up construction or stop projects altogether, as there is no legal recourse if the adjoining neighbours refuses to sign one.
