New fund aims to increase productivity in construction sector in B.C.

Employers and workers in the construction sector will have better support as B.C. launches the Workplace Innovation Fund, a program focused on labour supply and inclusion, along with new ways of improving productivity and employee retention.


Opioid overdose epidemic report reveals 'an average of 21 deaths per day'

A new report from the Special Advisory Committee on the Epidemic of Opioid Overdoses found that in Canada between January and March 2023, there were 1,904 opioid-related deaths, an average of 21 deaths per day.


Ontario expanding Investing in Women's Futures program

The Ontario government is expanding the Investing in Women’s Futures program to 10 additional locations across the province, including the Women’s Centre of York Region in Newmarket. This expansion is part of a $6.9 million investment over three years to enhance the program and create more economic opportunities for women.


B.C. construction unions demand flushing toilets on work sites

The BC Building Trades Council is calling on Premier David Eby and Minister of Labour Harry Bains to require flushing toilets on construction sites that have 25 workers or more, as has been a requirement in Quebec since 2015.

Gaps in understanding for 2S/LGBTQ+ populations in skilled trades: report

Skilled trades in Canada employ over 3 million Canadians, or one in six of the labour force. According to the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), 93 per cent of tradespeople identify as heterosexual men, 0.3 per cent identify as heterosexual women, 0.5 per cent as gay men, 0.6 per cent as lesbian women and 0.2 per cent as bisexual men and women. A new report, titled “2S/LGBTQ+ populations in the trades in Canada: Exploratory insight,” released through the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation, aims to analyzes and address the gaps in understanding the context of 2S/LGBTQ+ individuals in the trades in Canada. » Read more...
