Statistics Canada released a new analysis of the construction industry's employment numbers. According to the recent analysis, in addition to zoning, fees, permits, cost of materials and other challenges involved in getting shovels in the ground to meet the demand for housing, having enough labour to build it all and the cost of wages is a common concern.

The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) invites code users, the Codes community, and the public to participate in the winter 2024 public review of proposed changes to the 2020 editions of the National Model Codes. The proposed changes included in this public review address the following topics in the National Building Code of Canada, the National Fire Code of Canada, the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, and the National Plumbing Code of Canada.

The Manitoba government has appointed Tanya Palson, executive director of the Manitoba Building Trades, as the new chair of the Manitoba Apprenticeship Board. Minister Jamie Moses noted these appointments are part of the Manitoba government’s efforts to refocus on the development of frontline jobs and skills that build the province’s economic development.

When it comes to tackling the housing supply and affordability crisis, we have a very tall mountain to climb. It is critical that we get our act together – and quickly. To move the needle here in Canada, we must find ways to get shovels in the ground quicker – for all types of housing. One way to do that is to streamline and digitize the development approvals process. Digitization would speed up the process. It would also reduce the cost of construction. By Richard Lyall.

It is important to understand that national housing starts in 2023 are not high relative to Canada’s population. In 1976, our population was about 23 million with housing starts of 273,000. In 2023 our population is 40 million with starts of 240,000. Relative to the populations, that’s a 41 per cent difference in new housing. Government hasn’t the resources nor the ability to have any real impact on supply by building homes. Instead, they should cap new fees and regulations, get out of the way, and let the private sector fix the housing debacle created by government. By Casey Edge.
