Labour productivity of Canadian businesses edged down 0.2 per cent in the second quarter, after posting a similar decline in the previous quarter and a 0.3 per cent increase in the fourth quarter of 2023. Bank of Canada reduces policy rate again

The Bank of Canada reduced its target for the overnight rate to 4¼ per cent, with the Bank Rate at 4½ per cent and the deposit rate at 4¼ per cent. The bank is continuing its policy of balance sheet normalization. In Canada, the economy grew by 2.1 per cent in the second quarter, led by government spending and business investment. This was slightly stronger than forecast in July, but preliminary indicators suggest that economic activity was soft through June and July.
