Canada mounts legal challenges over softwood lumber tariffs

With the announcement in August of new U.S. tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber, the WRLA is paying close attention to developments. Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, issued the following statement to announce that Canada will challenge the final results of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s fifth Canadian softwood lumber reviews.


Proposed development cost charges put housing infrastructure funds at risk: VRBA

The B.C. Capital Regional District is considering adding Development Cost Charges (DCC) of up to $9,000 per new home for a proposed water supply project.   If the CRD launches the DCCs, it may disqualify CRD municipalities from applying for the federal government’s recently launched Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund.


Ontario fuels growth in residential sector: Stats Canada

The total value of building permits in Canada increased by $1.3 billion (+11.5%) to $13.0 billion in September, reaching the second-highest level since the start of the new series in January 2017. Ontario's construction intentions grew by $1.2 billion (+25.0%) to $5.9 billion in September 2024, leading gains in both the non-residential and residential sectors.
