Alberta is feeling it after some strong 2024 homebuilding numbers. Meanwhile the cries of Ontario builders get louder by the day. Perhaps if the two provinces spoke to one another...?

According to a provincial government release, Alberta is getting shovels in the ground faster and building the homes Albertans need. Year-end data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reinforces that Alberta continues to show strong success in increasing the supply of homes, which helps stabilize housing costs and improves the housing outlook for Albertans across the province. Last year was reported to be a record-breaking one for homebuilding in the province.

Last year was a particularly challenging year for the residential construction industry. By all accounts, this year doesn’t look any better. We are in for tough times. In Ontario, the government set an ambitious goal to build at least 1.5 million homes by 2031, requiring 150,000 new homes annually. But we are nowhere near that figure due to the cost of building. In 2023, the province reported only 110,584 new homes were started. And that figure included homes and condos, as well as long-term care beds, and additional residential units.
