Ontario premier addresses RESCON meeting

Ontario premier Doug Ford spoke at the Annual General Meeting of the Residential Construction Council of Ontario on Jan. 23, delivering a blunt assessment of the barriers preventing Ontario from meeting its housing construction goals. "At the municipalities, we have bureaucrats across the province and some really tough numbers," he fumed. "No matter what you want to build, they won't let you build a garage, they won't let you build a doghouse without taking five years to go through it. I call it the carousel..."

Ottawa funding Red Seal training in Alberta

Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour Steven MacKinnon has announced funding of nearly $5 million to the Trade Winds to Success Training Society to train more than 290 Indigenous Red Seal apprentices in support of Canada's Housing Plan. Funded under the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy, the Towards Net Zero Residential Construction project will enable Indigenous apprentices to develop Red Seal trade skills that support the transition to a clean economy and reduce environmental impacts.

Montreal to build significant social housing

The federal government and the city of Montreal are supporting the renovation of 726 housing units for families in Montreal. The city is also building temporary shelters for people awaiting social housing, according to reports. Les Habitations Le Domaine, owned by Gerer son Quartier, is located at 2990 Granby Avenue in Montreal. The housing project will undergo major repairs to bring the fire alarm system in its 111 buildings up to code, and to ensure that emergency exits comply with current regulations.

The Hammer Episode #52: Step Lightly – Jared Kress and Chris Maskell

Jared Kress of Metropolitan Floors and Chris Maskell of the National Floor Covering Association of Canada join The Hammer to set us straight on the impact insulation class (IIC) for flooring. This is the number that tells us how much a flooring product prevents sound transmission to the space below from footsteps. Some condo boards and architects are specifying crazy numbers for these ratings, but what you get in a lab is often not what you get in the field. Kress and Maskell take us through how the rating is calculated, what impacts the actual performance in your project and what you need to tell clients who think your floor can be made absolutely silent. » Read More...
