U.S. homebuilders protest Trump tariffs

The American National Association of Home Builders has posted the open letter below in reaction to Trump's order placing tariffs on imported Canadian goods. The letter is signed by Carl L. Harris, chairman of NAHB. Dear President Trump, Our country is facing a severe housing shortage and affordability crisis, which you recognized on your first day in office by issuing an executive order that seeks to increase housing supply and affordability.

Central Ontario Housing Summit talks ADUs

The Central Ontario Housing Summit, hosted by the Durham Region Homebuilders Association, got some useful education on Accessory Dwelling Units from an expert panel composed of Steve Brockstein (Tribute Communities), Kyle Bentley (city of Pickering), Paul Wirch (city of Pickering), John Taylor (town of Whitby), Alex Muzanovic (Muzanovic Design) and Paul Murray (LCM Project Management and General Contracting). ADUs have been top-of-mind as part of the solution to the housing crisis, with provincial and federal government encouraging municipalities to loosen rules around basement apartments and additional outbuildings on urban residential properties. ADUs are viewed positively by urban planners as a way to achieve “gentle densification” – increasing the living space of a given area without dramatically increasing congestion and infrastructure costs. » Read more...

Comment: Ford might have to pay bigly to make our housing dreams come true

I’ve been attending some Ontario association conferences over the last month and a major feature of each of them has been a steady drumbeat of complaint about municipal development charges. It’s certainly the position of RESCON and many at the Ontario Homebuilders Association that these charges are far too high, are escalating out of control, are not delivering the value they claim to be, are being redirected to purposes other than supporting development and, overall, are strangling builders ability to fund new projects and get the building going that the province desperately needs. » Read More...

Episode #53: The Costs Must Drop – Richard Lyall, RESCON

Canada, and especially Ontario, faces a housing crisis in which we are building less than half the new homes each year we are expected to need. But even so, housing starts dropped in Ontario in 2024. Radical action is clearly needed, and RESCON CEO Richard Lyall has some ideas. He joins The Hammer for some tough talk about the need for big cuts to development fees and taxes; new investment in infrastructure; harmonization of codes and standards; slashing of red tape in approvals process; the need to fight U.S. tariffs and more. » Listen now!

The Hammer Episode #52: Step Lightly – Jared Kress and Chris Maskell

Jared Kress of Metropolitan Floors and Chris Maskell of the National Floor Covering Association of Canada join The Hammer to set us straight on the impact insulation class (IIC) for flooring. This is the number that tells us how much a flooring product prevents sound transmission to the space below from footsteps. Some condo boards and architects are specifying crazy numbers for these ratings, but what you get in a lab is often not what you get in the field. Kress and Maskell take us through how the rating is calculated, what impacts the actual performance in your project and what you need to tell clients who think your floor can be made absolutely silent. » Read More...

Episode #51: Inflation vs Productivity – Steve Johnston, Omnigence

Steve Johnston of Omnigence, a private equity firm investing in the construction sector, has a stark warning. He sees a real risk of long-term stagflation (inflation coupled with low productivity and high unemployment) in our present conditions and government policies. His white paper lays out the broad details, but he joins The Hammer to talk about the specific effects in Canada’s homebuilding sector and what will be needed to avoid them. » Read More...
