New WiFi-Based Concealed Weapons Detection System Boasts Key Advantages Compared to Millimeter Wave Technology

With a rise in mass shootings and public attacks in recent years, it’s never been more evident that a better concealed weapons detection solution is needed to ensure the safety of the public and first responders. A new concealed weapons detection system, being developed by First Responder Technologies, uses WiFi-based technology as the solution.

Unlike other modern weapon and explosive detection technologies that have resulted in noteworthy privacy and health concerns, using WiFi as a weapons detection system offers the possibility for a more safe, effective and economic means to safeguard buildings and sites.

Compared to millimeter wave technology, which is used at many of the nation's airports, there are advantages to using WiFi instead. The WiFi system uses a lower frequency; there is no need for an FCC operating license to use it; and there are no health implications.

While many people, justifiably, become concerned when they are exposed to microwave or x-ray radiation, nearly all feel comfortable and safe with WiFi –– a technology that has become an innocuous part of our daily lives.

This new WiFi technology could be a ‘game changer’ for first responders and the security profession. With the cost much lower than X-ray-based systems to deploy, more facilities will be able to have better security and public safety could be significantly improved.
