There were several large rainfall events this spring in Illinois that left water ponded on even intensively drained fields for what seemed like forever. Drainage systems in the state are typically designed using a 0.375 inch or a 0.5 inch drainage coefficient, but is this enough? Optimizing cost and benefit helps answer the question as to whether or not recommended design drainage coefficients should be increased.
